Spontaneous Disaster Volunteers

Volunteering Sunshine Coast is especially proud of our partnership with the Sunshine Coast Council and Volunteering Qld. This valuable partnership reflects our commitment to this region and allows us to be aware of community needs and maximise our support across the Sunshine Coast.

This partnership also encompasses the implementation of the Spontaneous Disaster Volunteer Recovery Program. The increasing frequency and unpredictability of natural disasters requires a ready supply of skilled disaster volunteers. We are the lead Sunshine Coast agency able to provide and coordinate spontaneous volunteers assisting those who are experiencing misfortune and distress during a disaster event.

The program has recruited and trained 8 Senior Coordinators and 50 Team Leaders, all ready to be deployed in the event of a disaster to begin the recovery phase. Volunteer positions can include assisting at clearing debris, distributing information, assisting in education, community and evacuation centres to the people who may be suffering the misfortune of a disaster. In the event of a disaster, there will always be an influx of spontaneous volunteers, similar to the Brisbane floods in 2011 our trained team of Disaster Coordinators and Team Leaders will be ready to lead large numbers of volunteers.
